Max

Updated: May 29

Last Updated:  May 26, 2025

Date of Arrival:  May 8, 2025

Age:  Approx. 7 years old

Breed:  Chihuahua

Size:  Approx. 8lbs

Gender:  Male

Adoption Status:  Max is on medical hold

Personality:  Max is a gentle, affectionate, and resilient little guy. He loves to cuddle, is happiest curled up on your lap, and has shown himself to be incredibly sweet and patient, despite ongoing health challenges. He’s calm, quiet, and enjoys a relaxed environment. Max forms strong bonds with his people and is a loyal little shadow once he feels safe.

House training/Pee Pad Training:  Max is working on house training. He may need to be carried outside, as he doesn't currently do stairs. He is adjusting to having a consistent bathroom routine, due to his health.

Walks/Leash Training:  Max enjoys short strolls and has gone on walks in a stroller. He’s getting used to the harness and leash, and does best with gentle encouragement.

Children:  Max has been around young children and has done wonderfully—he’s gentle, cuddly, and very tolerant.

Dogs, Cats and Other Friends:  Max has been fostered in homes with other dogs and has gotten along well with them. We don't have any information on how he does with cats, but he has a gentle nature and we expect he would do well with calm and respectful animal friends.

Best Home Environment:  Max would thrive in a calm, quiet home with someone who would give him lots of love and cuddles. A home without many stairs would be ideal.

Preference may be given to a home with a securely fenced yard.

A note about secure fencing - While each dog is different in the level of security needed, we require the fence be of a height that the dog could not jump over (some of our dogs can easily scale a 5 foot fence), no gaps in fencing, gate is secure, and the bottom of the fence is also free from gaps or areas where a dog could dig out from underneath.

A note about being a flight risk - Flight risk can be the result of many things, including fear, lack of "street-wise" skills, or incredible curiosity for the sights, smells, and sounds on the other side of the fence. Any of these reasons could lead to the dog attempting to break free of their leash or seek out gaps so they can move past the fence.

We strongly encourage adopters to enrol in a basic obedience course with the dog they adopt. Participating in an obedience course can help build trust between human and dog, help the dog gain confidence and social interaction skills, and build strong recall skills, in addition to the on and off leash skills that basic obedience training can provide.

Health:  Max is currently undergoing vetting to address some respiratory concerns (suspected collapsed trachea and possible nasal irritation). We are hopeful that he'll be feeling like his best self soon.

History:  Max came to us from Winnipeg Animal Services. We thank WAS for entrusting Max to our care.
