Date of Arrival: October 27, 2021
Age: Approx. 2-3 yrs old
Size: small - currently approx 7.5 lbs but underweight
Adoption Status: We are accepting applications for Burton
Personality: Oh this boy has personality! Burton loves and attaches strongly to his people. New people - it takes some time but then he is all in! After the initial nerves he is friendly and fun. He is a VERY active dog who needs alot of activity and loves play ... and snuggles!
He is not crazy being alone but does ok on his own too.
House training/Pee Pad Training: Burton is doing well in building good housetraining skills with few accidents.
Walks/leash training: Burton MUST be on a leash and the leash must be secure to the human. Burton will bolt and run if given even one split second of "freedom". We had a very scary incident where his leash fell away for just a millisecond and he was racing and it took a truck to catch up to him - he is fast fast fast! He has no recall at all and when he bolts he seems to be incapable of responding/hearing - he is in a zone of race and race far. He needs walks - lots of walks and every day and ideally a jog or two each week. He would be a fantastic dog to take on runs and hikes providing you can keep him securely attached to you with his leash. When he ran, he was out in the country - had that happened in the city the outcome could have been tragic as he would quite likely have run into traffic without a thought!
Children: Burton is abit too energetic for young children but would do well with dog savy kids over the age of 11/12.
Dogs, Cats and Other Friends: Burton is in a foster home with two other small dogs and gets along well with them. He loves having the zoomies with the more active of the two dogs in his foster home.
Best Home Environment: Burton needs a home with a very secure fence. This is non-negotiable. His best home with have people who are active and can take him for daily walks , hikes, runs and lots of activity. Burton's adopters will need to be understanding that he will require high activity but that he must be kept safe and he may never be suited to an off leash lifestyle. We would strongly recommend that his adopters consider doggie daycare for activity and building confidence and skills as well as in person dog training with a skilled trainer to ensure that he can enhance confidence, develop as much as he is able to in terms of recall and impulse control.
Health: Burton is having his neuter surgery this week after which he is expected to have completed all health requirements and is a clinically healthy dog.
History: Burton was an unclaimed dog from Winnipeg Animal Services. We thank WAS for entrusting Burton to our care.
Adoption Fee: Burton's adoption fee is $400
