Date of Arrival: April 21, 2025
Age: Approx. 2 ½ years old
Breed: Poodle X
Size: 11 lbs
Gender: Male
Adoption Status: We are accepting applications for Onyx

Personality: Onyx is a little sweetheart. His foster tells us that he is a quiet and gentle but playful dog. He's a happy little guy who loves to greet his humans when they come home. His favourite place to sit is at his foster mom's feet, close to the space heater in the colder months. He loves to sleep on the bed, and will wake the humans up in the morning with little kisses.
House training/Pee Pad Training: Onyx is outdoor trained.
Walks/Leash Training: Onyx loves going for walks, but sometimes needs a reminder to use his leash manners and not pull on the leash. He does quite well calming down when he is instructed to. He loves exploring the neighbourhood side by side with his canine foster sister.
Children: We are looking for a home with older, dog savvy children for Onyx. He is a great dog, but can be protective/possessive of his treats, and and all members of the household should be aware of this. He also nips out of fear or discomfort
Dogs, Cats and Other Friends: Onyx is doing well with his foster sister. He is polite but interested in what she is doing. He is good at sharing his food and water dish, but does not like to share his treats. We think he would be happy as an only dog or with another dog in the home.

Best Home Environment: Onyx can be unsure about strangers entering the house, especially men he doesn't know.
Poodle coats require regular upkeep in order to avoid matting. Potential adopters should plan for Onyx to be groomed every 6-8 weeks. Onyx was very uneasy when being groomed recently. The groomer used a muzzle on him, as he was quite quick to snap/nip when he felt uncomfortable. He also did not appreciate his front feet being handled. The groomer has suggested that his future adopters only bring him to someone who has experience working with trauma-impacted/fearful dogs, as the experience was quite stressful for him
Preference may be given to a home with a securely fenced yard.
A note about secure fencing - While each dog is different in the level of security needed, we require the fence be of a height that the dog could not jump over (some of our dogs can easily scale a 5 foot fence), no gaps in fencing, gate is secure, and the bottom of the fence is also free from gaps or areas where a dog could dig out from underneath.
A note about being a flight risk - Flight risk can be the result of many things, including fear, lack of "street-wise" skills, or incredible curiosity for the sights, smells, and sounds on the other side of the fence. Any of these reasons could lead to the dog attempting to break free of their leash or seek out gaps so they can move past the fence.
We strongly encourage adopters to enrol in a basic obedience course with the dog they adopt. Participating in an obedience course can help build trust between human and dog, help the dog gain confidence and social interaction skills, and build strong recall skills, in addition to the on and off leash skills that basic obedience training can provide.
Health: Onyx has been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. We do not anticipate that this will affect his lifespan, however he will require somewhat of a specialized diet, and bloodwork every 3-6 months. Bloodwork may also need to be done more frequently for the first several months.
History: Onyx was an owner surrender.
Adoption Fee: Onyx's adoption fee is $500
